Viewpoint Discrimination in Plain Sight: Citizen Removed for Questioning Contracts in Maricopa County

They don’t like the questions — so they remove the questioner.

During a recent Maricopa County Board of Supervisors meeting, Lori Baron calmly addressed massive contract increases hidden under the consent agenda — including a jump to over $6.5 million for Tetrate Tech.

She raised legitimate concerns about transparency, change orders, and the need for a Corrective Action Plan (CAP) on county contracts. She also noted that 78.95% of agenda items were shielded from public comment.

When she said “God help y’all” and referenced a subpoena, the Board immediately ordered her removed for “profanity.”

No yelling. No disruption. Just pointed, uncomfortable questions about how taxpayer money is being spent — and suddenly she’s escorted out.

This is viewpoint discrimination, plain and simple. The same meetings where supervisors hold up tweets and rant for minutes without consequence, or where citizens are kicked out for holding constitutional references, now punish people for challenging opaque contracting practices.

The public has every right to scrutinize contracts, consent agendas, and spending — especially when those decisions affect elections, budgets, and county operations. Silencing citizens who follow the process doesn’t create order. It destroys trust.

Freedom requires vigilance — especially at the local level. When transparency vanishes and accountability is met with removal, citizens must keep showing up, keep recording, and keep demanding answers.

No more viewpoint discrimination in public meetings. No more hiding behind “decorum” to avoid scrutiny.

Times have changed. We see it. We’re documenting it.
