In the middle of heated debates, political tension, and serious issues facing our county, a veteran’s humble prayer reminded everyone what truly matters.
During a recent Maricopa County Board of Supervisors meeting, Sergeant Mark Helman — a brother in Christ, 82nd Airborne Division veteran with multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan — was invited forward to deliver the invocation and lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Sergeant Helman prayed with sincerity and power:
“Heavenly Father… I pray that you would instill into us a remembrance that we can trust in You… Grant us the eyes to see and the ears to hear the proclamation of Your holy word… That we would have the strength, courage, and faith to walk the narrow path that You lay before us.”
His words echoed Proverbs 3:5-6 — trusting in the Lord with all our heart rather than leaning on our own understanding. In a room where division and difficult decisions are common, Mark brought calm, humility, and a reminder of our dependence on God.
A proud servant who now continues protecting the public at the Board meetings, Sergeant Helman also serves at Christ Church – Central Phoenix. His example shows that faith and public service can walk hand in hand.
At It Is Our Duty, we believe biblical principles still belong in the public square. When leaders and citizens humble themselves before God, seek wisdom from above, and treat one another with grace, real healing and righteous governance become possible.
We are grateful for veterans like Sergeant Mark Helman who continue to serve — both in uniform and in spirit — bringing light into what can often feel like darkness.
