Citizens brought the receipts to the Maricopa County Library District Board — and the evidence is disturbing.
Speakers cited ARS 13-3507 (Crimes Against Children), exposing sexually explicit books openly available in children’s and young adult sections. Books like It’s Perfectly Normal (graphic sex acts on page 9) and This Book is Gay (explicit instructions) are sitting at eye level for kids as young as 6–10.

Key moments:
- “It is unlawful to knowingly furnish or make available to a minor any harmful items that is obscene or sexually explicit in nature.”
- A 16-year-old student: “When you have sexually explicit material in front of children, it makes it so normal in their mind.”
- Multiple parents and grandparents asking: Where is the urgency? Where is the shield for the family tree?
- Clear conflict of interest called out: The board is getting legal advice from the same County Attorney’s Office that prosecutes these crimes.
Citizens have been raising this for over a year. They submitted lists of 282+ explicit titles. They offered solutions: content review, parental oversight committee, age-appropriate segregation, and independent legal counsel.
Yet it’s still “in process… it moves at the speed of government.”
Our children’s innocence is not optional. Public libraries should be safe places for learning — not gateways to graphic sexual content. Parents, not activists or government employees, should decide what’s appropriate for their kids.
The people are watching. The applause at the end showed the community is awake and united on this.
No more delays. No more excuses. Protect the children.
